What is ISO 26000?

ISO 26000 is an international standard that provides guidance on social responsibility for organizations. It helps companies, public institutions and non-profit organizations integrate the principles of responsible, ethical and sustainable behaviour into their everyday operations.

The standard focuses on an organization’s relationship with its employees, customers, business partners, local communities, the environment and other stakeholders. ISO 26000 supports organizations in going beyond mere compliance with legal requirements and actively contributing to sustainable development.

Unlike standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, ISO 26000 is not intended for certification. It serves as a practical guideline for assessing, developing and improving an organization’s approach to social responsibility.

ISO 26000 Requirements

ISO 26000 does not contain certification requirements, but provides recommendations and principles for responsible organizational management. It focuses mainly on:

  • Transparent and ethical organizational governance
  • Compliance with legal requirements and international standards of behaviour
  • Protection of human rights and fair working conditions
  • Responsible approach to customers, partners and suppliers
  • Consideration of the organization’s environmental impacts
  • Engagement of stakeholders in the development of social responsibility
